| Selkirk Mountain Adventure - Clearly The Best Hiking In Canada
August 15 - 22,
2009
In the summer of 1882, Major Albert Bowman Rogers (known as Hells Bells Rogers for his penchant for profanity) climbed the North-South Selkirk Mountain barrier and confirmed the existence of a pass through the almost impenetrable Selkirk Range. His discovery earned him $5,000 and a permanent place in Canadian history, provided the Canadian Pacific Railroad with a route to the ocean and gave future generations access to the most beautiful and challenging hiking destination in Canada – The Selkirk Mountains .
Our trip starts in busy Calgary but we are soon silenced by the scenery as we traverse four ranges of the Rocky Mountains (Foothills, Kootenays, Purcells and Selkirks) and stop to admire several of the attractions along the way including the famous Spiral Tunnel, intriguing Wolf Centre in Golden, historic Rogers Pass and scenic Revelstoke Mountain.
The highlight of this trip is a helicopter flight followed by four days and nights at an exclusive isolated mountain chalet at 1,938 meters elevation in the heart of the Selkirk Mountains surrounded by the best hiking anywhere in Canada .
Day 1 – we meet at a designated hotel in Calgary, Alberta.
Day 2 - we bypass the crowds of Banff, have lunch on the banks of the Columbia river in Golden then on to Yoho National Park to experience the historic “Spiral Tunnel” and visit a unique “Wolf Centre” to learn about these wonderful creatures before settling in to a mountain lodge on the edge of Glacier National Park.
Day 3 - We start the next day with a visit to the educational Rogers Pass Visitor's Centre, climb to the summit of Revelstoke National Park and hike 6 kilometers to Eva lake. We can end the day with a visit to the Railroad museum in Revelstoke or have an early night to prepare for the early helicopter flight the following day.
Day 4 - The helicopter ride over snow covered mountain tops to our chalet is absolutely breath-taking and gives some idea of what is to follow. After a briefing by our guide we enjoy a warm-up hike along Moon Ridge – 372 meters elevation gain, 8 kilometers among fields of alpine flowers and the occasional marmot.
Day 5 - Mirror Lake, Goat Peak and Goat Lake – 360 meters elevation gain in two parts, 7 kilometers with great views of the Durrand glacier and a chance to meet mountain goats.
Day 6 - Twin Falls to Swiss Meadows 580 meters elevation gain, 8 kilometers and a chance for a cool dip in Tumbledown Lake.
Day 7 - A 10 km loop over Moon Ridge to Camelot, Woolsey Glacier then back along Moon Hill to Honeymoon Lake. Elevation gain 481 meters in three parts, 10 kilometers then back to the chalet for a final dinner.
Day 8 - Early transfer by helicopter back to Revelstoke then a drive back to Calgary with lunch at a “hippy” restaurant in Field. Book an evening or next morning flight from Calgary.
Total cost for 8 days from Calgary is $2,300
plus 5% GST
covering specified van transport, park admissions, two helicopter flights, daily guided program, accommodation (double occupancy), and all meals from lunch on day 4 to breakfast on day 8.
Although every effort will be made to adhere to the above program, changes may be necessary due to unforeseen circumstances
