| Selkirk Mountain Adventure - Clearly The Best Hiking In Canada
August 14 - 21, 2010
In the summer of 1882, Major Albert Bowman Rogers (known as Hells Bells Rogers for his penchant for profanity) climbed the North-South Selkirk Mountain barrier and confirmed the existence of a pass through the almost impenetrable Selkirk Range. His discovery earned him $5,000 and a permanent place in Canadian history, provided the Canadian Pacific Railroad with a route to the ocean and gave future generations access to the most beautiful and challenging hiking destination in Canada – The Selkirk Mountains .
Our trip starts in busy Calgary but we are soon silenced by the scenery as we traverse four ranges of the Rocky Mountains (Foothills, Kootenays, Purcells and Selkirks) and stop to admire several of the attractions along the way including the famous Spiral Tunnel, historic Rogers Pass and scenic Revelstoke Mountain.
The highlight of this trip is a helicopter flight followed by four days and nights at an exclusive isolated mountain chalet at 1,938 meters elevation in the heart of the Selkirk Mountains surrounded by the best hiking anywhere in Canada .
Day 1 – We meet in Calgary, Alberta. Please arrange a flight that arrives around noon and be sure to inform Natural Outings of arrival time. We drive to the delightful town of Golden BC for two days. We will stop at the Visitors Centre in Field, BC for maps and information on nearby Yoho National Park.
Day 2 - On the road early back to the Yoho river valley where we hike a loop over the scenic Iceline Trail passing tiny Lake Celeste to dramatic Laughing Falls. We then rejoin the Yoho Valley Trail and return to our start point via the bottom of Takakkawa Falls. A memorable loop of 16 + Km.
Day 3 - A rest and education day beginning with a visit to the Rogers Pass Visitor’s Centre followed by the Railroad Museum in Revelstoke. Early night to prepare for the helicopter flight the following day
Day 4 - The helicopter ride over snow covered mountain tops to our chalet is absolutely breath-taking and gives some idea of what is to follow. After a briefing by our local guide we enjoy a warm-up hike along Moon Ridge – 304 meters elevation gain, 8 km among fields of alpine flowers and the occasional marmot.
Day 5 – Two Glaciers Day. We climb to the foot of Allalin Glacier then over Goat Peak to Goat Lake and the edge of the Durrand Glacier - 348 meters, 7 km with a chance to see resident Mountain Goats
Day 6 - Across the valley and switchback up to Canadian Meadows and the Goat Café - 354 meters, 5 km. Across the path of the receding glacier.
Day 7 –Over the neck of Moon Ridge to Boogie Basin and Camelot Ridge and up the celebrated ladder. Then back over Moon Hill to Honeymoon Lake. Total elevation gain 471 meters in three parts, 10 km then back to the chalet for a celebration dinner.
Day 8 – Early transfer by helicopter back to Revelstoke then drive back to Calgary .
